Our Ethos

SUR is an all Irish co-educational primary school established in 1985 by parents wishing to have their children taught through the medium of Irish. The school aims to promote the Irish language and its associated culture within the school and in the general public at large.

The school’s motto is SONAS (spreagaimís onóir, neamhspleachas, aonarachas & sábháilteacht) í Scoil Uí Riada.

The school’s patron is The Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin. School governance is based on the Rules & Regulations of Primary Schools (1973) laid down by the Department of Education & Science (DES) and which may be amended by DES from time to time. The school follows the curricular programmes prescribed by the DES, which may be amended from time to time, in accordance with section 9 and 30 of The Education Act (1998).

The school supports the principles of inclusiveness and equality of access to all pupils within the context and parameters of DES regulations and programmes.

The governing ethos of the school is Roman Catholic, promoting the Christian concepts of the world that contribute to the good of society as a whole. The school provides religious education for its pupils in accordance with the doctrines, practices and tradition of the Catholic Church. All reasonable effort is made to accommodate people of other religions or those of none who wish their children to be educated in a Catholic school. SUR aims to be inclusive, welcoming diversity of beliefs as an opportunity for dialogue and understanding with those of different faiths.

The school and the home collaborate through active partnership in developing the fullness of the child’s potential. Teachers are sensitive to the needs, circumstances and value of each pupil. While recognizing that parents have the primary responsibility for the education of their children, SUR endeavors to provide a welcoming safe learning environment through the medium of Irish, where all children have the opportunity to develop their potential as happy, confident, proud and respectful individuals capable of playing a positive role in society.

The school aims for excellence in all areas and among all it’s pupils. The Irish language and its associated areas of music, dance and sport have traditionally played a particularly significant role in the daily achievements of the school community. If you share the values, ethos and vision as described in this statement, we extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Scoil Uí Riada community.
